Success is a Two-Way Street
Many people don't seem to realize that success is a two-way street. It's not just about your success. People who are obsessed with "looking out for Number One" and running past, over or through others soon find out that they have no one to support them in their never-ending quests for power, achievement or riches.
Enduring success belongs to those who follow Jesus' advice and are merciful to others even as they reprimand or bypass them, who are helpful even when they don't need to be. Truly successful people are those who are both respectful and encouraging to all around them. In turn, they're noticed, respected and appreciated--especially by employers deciding whom to advance. These are also the very same qualities that employees look for when they enthusiastically embrace and support new leaders (as opposed to sabotaging them).
Bottom line : be as generous as you can (we're just not talking just money here, but mostly time, advice and attention) and be merciful -overlook mistakes when you can, couch reprimands as diplomatically as possible. Encourage people with pats on the back or "well dones." Be helpful, even when the issue is "not your department" or in your obvious interest to do so. Then enjoy your success.
